The Institute of Financial Professionals Australia’s (IFPA) new AI Tax Helpline will this week be active and available as part of your membership. It has been developed to give you practical tax support when you need it, including outside normal office hours, so that you can keep delivering timely, accurate advice to your clients.
If you are an eligible member (professional or platinum) a separate member email will be sent to you with:
- The dedicated AI Tax Helpline phone number
- Step by step instructions on how to access and use the system
If you cannot locate that email, please check your junk folder or contact IFPA Member Services for assistance.
What is the AI Tax Helpline?
The AI Tax Helpline is a member only service that draws directly on IFPA’s core technical tax content to provide clear, issue based guidance. In this initial stage, the system has been trained on:
- The Tax Summary
- The State Tax Summary
These publications form the source material that underpins every response. The helpline is designed to help you quickly navigate specific provisions, thresholds and rules that are covered in these resources.
What the helpline can help with now
In its initial release, the AI Tax Helpline is best suited to:
- Targeted questions about specific tax topics
- Clarification of rules and thresholds already covered in the Tax Summary or State Tax Summary
- Directional guidance that points you to relevant sections or considerations
- Quick checks when you are working outside business hours
Examples include queries such as:
- How a particular concession operates in broad terms
- High level conditions that must be satisfied for a given provision to apply
- Summary level information about relevant rates, thresholds or time frames
What the helpline is not designed for yet
At this stage, the AI Tax Helpline is not configured to handle full, detailed client scenarios in one query. It is not intended to:
- Work through complex multi entity or multi jurisdiction arrangements
- Replace your professional judgement in high risk or contentious matters
- Provide a complete written advice suitable for client reliance
You should continue to apply your professional skill and judgement and use the AI responses alongside other source materials, not as a substitute for them.
Superannuation support
Your superannuation support continues exactly as it does now through the existing helpline arrangements.
We are actively assessing the incorporation of superannuation content into the AI Helpline as a second phase of development. Members will be informed ahead of any change to the way superannuation queries are handled.
Getting the best result from the AI Tax Helpline
To make the most of the service in this first stage, we recommend that you:
- Ask clear, focused questions on a single tax topic at a time
- Avoid lengthy client narratives that are not required to frame the issue
- Use plain language and refer to specific areas of tax where possible
- Treat responses as guidance, to be weighed alongside your experience and other technical materials
The AI Tax Helpline has been designed to support how you already work, not to alter your professional responsibilities.
Safeguarding standards and responsibilities
IFPA’s priority is to strengthen the practical support available to members while upholding professional and regulatory standards. The AI Tax Helpline:
- Is an additional aid to help you work efficiently
- Does not remove the need for your own review and judgement
- Sits alongside IFPA’s broader programme of CPD, publications and advocacy
You remain responsible for the advice provided to your clients and for ensuring that any reliance on AI generated guidance is appropriate in the circumstances.
Next steps and member feedback
This is the first stage of a longer term digital support strategy for tax, superannuation and advice professionals. IFPA will:
- Refine and expand the AI content set over time
- Monitor usage patterns to understand where members most need support
- Invite member feedback to shape future enhancements
If you have suggestions or comments about the AI Tax Helpline, we encourage you to share them with our team. Your input will help us continue to build a practical, member focused service that reflects the way you work.
If by Wednesday 3 December 2025 you have not received your access email
Contact IFPA Member Services and our team will re issue your AI Tax Helpline details so you can start using the service.
