Q&A with Financial Adviser of the Year and the Australian Financial Professional of the Year

  • January 17, 2025

Ky Wilson: Nicola, congratulations on being named not only the Financial Adviser of the Year but the Australian Financial Professional of the Year too. What does this recognition mean to you?

Nicola Beswick: Thank you, Ky. It’s truly an honour. This recognition affirms the work I’ve dedicated to supporting clients through some of the most challenging times in their lives. It’s a reflection of the value financial advice can bring, especially when tailored to the unique needs of individuals dealing with trauma, financial stress, and life-changing circumstances. Winning these awards not only highlights my efforts but also underscores the importance of empathetic, personalised financial strategies in our profession.

Ky: The judges described your work as deeply innovative and compassionate. Can you share what drives your passion for financial planning?

Nicola: My journey into financial planning was personal—I was inspired by my father’s experience living with multiple sclerosis. I’ve always believed that financial advice goes beyond numbers; it’s about empowering people, providing them with peace of mind, and helping them regain a sense of control. I’ve focused on supporting individuals receiving TPD claims, WorkCover payouts, or TAC settlements, as these clients often face complex financial and emotional challenges. My passion is creating strategies that are simple, effective, and life-changing for these individuals and their families.

Ky: This year’s awards celebrated excellence across various categories. In your opinion, what sets the Australian Financial Industry Awards apart from others in the sector?

Nicola: The awards are unique because they truly celebrate the breadth of talent in our industry, from SMSF auditing to bookkeeping, accounting, financial planning and beyond. They give recognition to professionals and practices that may not always receive the spotlight but are making a significant impact. The focus on the SME sector, in particular, is commendable—these practitioners often operate without the resources of larger firms, yet their contributions are immense. Being part of this inaugural event felt like joining a movement that honours the unsung heroes of financial services.

Ky: Can you talk about a specific moment or case in your career that embodies what you stand for as a financial professional?

Nicola: One case that stands out involved a couple deciding whether to accept a $1 million TAC payout or pursue legal action. They were separated, with two young children, and faced immense uncertainty. I proposed structured strategies, including a joint investment portfolio and an account-based pension, to ensure financial security for both parties. It wasn’t just about numbers—it was about creating a roadmap that offered clarity and stability during a tumultuous time. This experience reinforced my belief in the transformative power of quality financial advice.

Ky: How do you view collaboration within the industry, particularly through events like this?

Nicola: Collaboration is critical. The awards night wasn’t just a celebration—it was a platform to connect, share ideas, and foster a sense of community. Seeing professionals across disciplines come together to celebrate excellence was inspiring. It reminded me that while we often work in niche areas, we’re all part of a larger ecosystem striving to improve the financial well-being of Australians.

Ky: Lastly, what message would you like to share with aspiring financial professionals who look up to leaders like yourself?

Nicola: I’d encourage them to embrace empathy and authenticity in their work. Financial planning is about people’s lives, not just their money. Focus on building trust, understanding your clients’ unique stories, and delivering advice that empowers them. And don’t be afraid to innovate—our profession needs fresh ideas to meet the evolving needs of clients. Most importantly, stay true to your values and remember that success is measured not only by accolades but by the difference you make in people’s lives.

Ky: Thank you, Nicola, for sharing your insights. Your story exemplifies the heart of what we aimed to celebrate through these awards—dedication, innovation, and genuine care for clients.

Nicola: Thank you, Ky, and thank you for creating such an incredible platform to celebrate our profession. It’s been a privilege to be part of this event.
