Reverse Mortgages: The Overlooked Retirement Funding Strategy in a Changing Tax Landscape
To equip financial planners and accountants with a working understanding of home equity release/reverse mortgage lending as a retirement funding strategy (including related regulatory framework, consumer protections, and practical client applications) so they can identify when a referral conversation may be appropriate for their clients, particularly in light of recent changes to capital gains tax, negative gearing, and superannuation tax settings affecting older Australians.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:
Explain what a reverse mortgage/home equity release loan is, how it differs from a standard mortgage, and the regulatory safeguards that apply.
Identify the client profile and examples of life-stage scenarios where equity release may be a relevant option to raise with a client.
Understand how the 2026–27 Federal Budget's capital gains tax and negative gearing reforms, and the revised Division 296 superannuation tax, change the calculus for older Australians holding property and super assets.
Recognise the referral pathway and compliance boundaries for advisers and accountants - what they can and can't do, and how a compliant referral to a specialist lender works.
